The inspiration for Deluge came from the landscape here in Cincinnati.

Artist Statement +

Walking the trails in Mt. Airy Forest near my home, I often come upon steam beds that have eroded down to the bedrock. Geologically, this area was once the floor of an inland sea. One can easily find fossilized shells in the river rocks. The idea for the physical 3d texture here came from the patterns made by water in the stone and sand in these streams, mostly dry in the summer. The colors were inspired by the silt and living debris caught in the depressions. I also thought about the deep layers of sediment that have been exposed by the erosion and the unimaginable expanse of time that it took not only to create the stone but also to expose it. I think of the patterns made by the glaze colors flowing down, as a metaphor for that process.
